In short

When should I take a pregnancy test?

Home pregnancy tests are most reliable from the first day of your missed period. If you don't know when your period is due, test at least 21 days after you last had unprotected sex. Some very sensitive tests work a few days earlier, but a negative result that early isn't reliable, so test again if your period doesn't come.

Your estimate

—

This is an estimate, not a diagnosis or birth control.

General information, not medical advice. Your doctor or midwife can tell you what your own results mean.

How it's calculated

  1. Missed period = first day of last period + your cycle length. Tests are most reliable from this day.
  2. Earliest possible = ovulation + 10 days. hCG appears only after implantation, 6 to 12 days after ovulation.
  3. If you don't know when your period is due: test 21 days after unprotected sex.
  4. Testing a week after the missed period gives an even clearer answer.

Gyne learns your real cycle and adjusts these estimates as you log.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a pregnancy test before my missed period?

Some very sensitive tests can be used a few days before, but the hormone may not be high enough yet. A negative result before your missed period isn't reliable.

Does it have to be morning urine?

No. Morning urine is more concentrated, which can help very early, but you can test at any time of day. Follow the instructions on your test.

How accurate is a positive result?

A positive result is almost always correct. A negative result is less reliable, especially if you test early or don't follow the instructions. Some medicines can also affect the result.
