In short

When should I call about my contractions?

The NHS says to call your midwife or maternity unit when you have regular contractions every 5 minutes or more often. Call straight away if a contraction lasts longer than 2 minutes, you have 6 or more in 10 minutes, your waters break, you're bleeding, your baby is moving less, or you're less than 37 weeks pregnant.

Press start when the next contraction begins.

Keep timing. Call your midwife or maternity unit if you're unsure or worried at any point.

Call straight away, whatever the timer shows, if your waters break, you're bleeding, your baby is moving less than usual, or you're less than 37 weeks pregnant. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.

How it's calculated

  1. Length = from the start of a contraction to its end.
  2. Time apart = from the start of one contraction to the start of the next, the way midwives and doctors count.
  3. Averages use the contractions that started in the last 60 minutes.
  4. Advice lines follow the NHS guide on when to call your midwife or maternity unit.

Gyne learns your real cycle and adjusts these estimates as you log.

Frequently asked questions

How do I time contractions?

Note when each one starts and stops. The length is start to stop. How far apart they are is from the start of one to the start of the next.

How can I tell real labour from practice contractions?

Real labour contractions come regularly, get closer together, get stronger and keep going when you rest or move. Practice (Braxton Hicks) contractions are irregular and often stop when you change position.

How long does labour last?

For a first baby, labour typically lasts 12 to 18 hours, and 8 to 10 hours for later babies, but every labour is different.
